Michael Jackson Biography

Michael Joseph Jackson August 29, 1958 - June 25, 2009 was an American singer songwriter and dancer widely regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century. Dubbed the "King of Pop" his contributions to music dance and fashion made him a global icon.

Jackson began his career at age six as the lead singer of the Jackson 5 a group formed with his older brothers. They achieved worldwide fame on Motown Records with hits like "I Want You Back" and "ABC". Jackson launched his solo career while still with the group but his solo breakthrough came with the 1979 album Off the Wall.

His subsequent album Thriller 1982 became the best selling album of all time revolutionizing music videos with short film narratives for songs like "Billie Jean" and "Thriller". Jackson was known for his complex dance moves including the moonwalk and the robot. He broke racial barriers on MTV and was the recipient of numerous accolades including 15 Grammy Awards.

Jackson continued his success with albums like Bad and Dangerous. His highly publicized personal life and health struggles often dominated headlines. He was also a noted philanthropist supporting dozens of charities. Jackson died suddenly in 2009 at age 50 just before a planned comeback concert series. His legacy endures as a powerful force in popular music and entertainment.
